While growing up Mom and Grandma always suggested to include curd or buttermilk with the afternoon meal. They didn’t know about the term “Probiotics” then, but they always said it’s good for the stomach and digestion. Today’s generation is aware of the term “Probiotics” and also about the good and bad bacteria. Probiotics benefit is not only about the healthy gut, but it is more than that. It is one of the simplest and natural way to meet good health.
I attended Blogger’s Meet organized on 27th October’18 at Courtyard Marriott, Andheri by Dupont Nutrition and Health. The session was all about probiotics. It was an interesting and knowledge enhancing session. I got to know more about probiotic, its benefits, the perception around probiotics and its sources. Sharing here my knowledge gained from the event so if you are not much aware of it, I hope this post will help you in understanding the benefits of probiotic.
What are Probiotics?
According to the Joint Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization Probiotics are “Live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” The internal ecosystem is called microbiome which includes unique bacteria and trillions are bacteria live in the gut. The healthy balance between the good and bad bacteria makes the gut healthy and enhances the ability of the immune system to fight with the viruses, bacteria and diseases.
Probiotics are the gut-friendly bacteria which help in maintaining the proper balance of good and bad bacterias in the digestive system. Surprising, but 80% of the immune system lies within the gut. Whenever there is an imbalance in the gut flora or the ecological balance is disturbed due to improper diet, illness or out modern lifestyle, as a result, the bad bacteria outnumber the good bacteria and it impacts the digestive health.

It’s hard to obtain all of the healthy amount of probiotics through diet alone, which is why daily probiotic supplements are suggested. probiotic can also be taken in the form of a dietary supplement, which provides an effective way to ingest clinically documented probiotic strains in a controlled dosage.
